This new series highlights moments from the course including a variety of playing situations and lessons.

In this episode we’ve come across a difficult 387 yard par-4 with a tight fairway. I know the fairway looks wide, but you’ll see why it’s tougher than it looks. Shot placement is critical on this hole.

Hey Tom, thanks to your helpful responses to my questions on your channel, I have been able to make progress.

During practice, the biggest flaw in my swing is that I lean towards the target, i.e. my spine tilts towards the target, when I reach the top of the backswing. This is apparent from the face-on view.

This has caused a lot of problems, mostly with driver, as that is when I get the most rotation and tend to overswing. Heel strikes, negative AoA, etc. I can make solid contact if I push more weight down into the right instep.

What are your thoughts or recommendations on going about fixing this?

I am looking for the simplest and quickest solution, and I have many ideas, but I'm also highly curious. Because I've seen very good players with their shoulders over the trail leg. They are powerful strikers, but it does seem like a weight shift, which is against the law as I understand it.

This is a goodie!

A student was struggling with CASTING the club for years. “Casting” or “early extension” is the most common swing problem out there. It happens when the golfer straightens the trail arm early in the downswing.

This problem causes:

The club to bottom out behind the ball (fat shots)

The arms to shorten up at impact - killing distance

Poor impact position and no compression (flipping at impact, etc)

Slices and steep downswings

Standing up at impact and losing your relationship with the ball.

Fixing early extension gets you mashing the ball with straight arms AFTER impact. This creates an incredibly powerful strike that improves your irons and driver.

The student did this exact drill and was able to fix YEARS of bad swing habits. He was surprised it could happen that fast.

There’s a big myth that your “muscle memory” is engrained years of bad swing habits. That it takes you a long time to “break bad habits”.

I used to think that way UNTIL I realized that your muscles don’t have memory. 

Your brain remembers the swing feels but your muscles themselves can make ANY change right away. It doesn’t matter how old you are - I’ve taught 90 year old golfers who have made changes right away. 

You have to allow your muscles to change your swing feels. That’s where your brain gets in the way. Video your swing as you perform these drills to verify you’re making the moves as I demonstrate.

Your best friend IS VIDEO!!! (or a mirror at home) It’s the best way to track your progress.

Another note - usually the WEIRDEST swing feelings are the CORRECT ones. If your swing doesn’t feel weird, you’re not making a change.

 Fix Early Extension and YEARS of Bad Ball Striking With My New Favorite Drill

I’m going to share one of my best kept secrets for improving. It’s about simplicity. Breaking down the entire swing to its most basic components. Even pros practice the basics. 

When things go awry, I need a drill to get my swing back on track.

When things are going well, I need a drill to keep me on track.

That brings me to Drill 2.8…

Drill 2.8 is in the online golf school and needs re-introduction. It is one of the most underrated drills, yet it gets everything working in your swing.

It moves your body correctly - getting you to tilt, turn, and extend your spine (the 3 key body moves of the golf swing)

It keeps your lead arm straight and elbows together - ensuring you have crispy contact with the ball

The “all-encompassing” finale - you finish the drill with weight forward, arms straight, and shaft pointing down.

The shaft down concept is the compression booster. You feel the club mashing down and through the ball with a centered strike.

The Drill I ALWAYS DO To Get My Swing Playing Great

I have been working on the downswing trying to get my right shoulder through the golf swing faster and it feels like it’s my stomach muscles that are pulling everything through as I try to turn my shoulders faster. 

It reminds me of the first buckets of balls in the spring after a winter lay off, how I could feel the workout. 

Just curious is this normal or a sign I am doing something wrong? I don’t see anything on the web from you about engaging those core muscles.

Keeping the trail arm tucked in from P2 (backswing) to P6 (pre-impact) simplifies all positions of the swing down to a very basic move.

This will fix almost ALL golf swing problems. The key here is that you use your shoulder to move the arm. The arm is fixed meaning it’s job is to HOLD POSITION. The shoulder is the engine that moves the fixed arm around the body. Understanding this is crucial to using the right arm correctly in your swing.

Golf Digest just arrived with an interesting take on Mattieu Pavon's swing. Much was written about how he "turns his hips" and "posts up on his front leg" early in his downswing.

“How do you get the club in that position without lifting your arms?!”

He couldn’t seem to figure it out. 

In his mind, swinging the club INSIDE meant that the club had to swing low and around his body. But this is not the case…

There are vertical and horizontal components to the golf swing. 

Turn creates a horizontal (inward) movement.

Then there’s the vertical components that create upward movement. The examples we’ll talk about today are:

Lead arm sliding up the chest

Wrist hinge

Trail arm fold

Spine Tilt

Spine Extension

All these elements contribute to the upward movement of the club without lifting your arms.

Do you have to think about all these things when you swing?

No, of course not! That’s too much to think about.

This Takes the Mystery Out of the Backswing

I hit okay shots at the driving range but at the course I often top the ball, so I decided to get back to the impact training episodes. After watching them, I hit more than 25 solid shots in a row- hitting consistent have never been so easy! 

The main difference is that before improving my impact, I used to initiate my backswing with my lead shoulder and this tended to cause head dipping and make my trail foot not stick to the ground. I was able make compensation in the downswing but it required extra effort to remind myself that my head should stay in place. When your brain needs to process more than one thing at a time playing at the course, your swing becomes inconsistent.

With the impact drill, I realized that I should initiate the back swing with my trail shoulder, it helped me eliminating the variables, now I am able to :

1. Keep my head in place 
2. A flatter wrist at the top of back swing
3. Enjoy hitting the ball consistently, and even shaping the ball flight shot after shot- as the low point is now perfectly fixed.
